Warning: Winter Driving Ahead!

By Jodi McDaniel

As all Ohioans know, nothing is worse than driving in the winter. Traffic increases because everyone starts to drive slowly due to snow, ice and wind – all in less-than-pleasant temperatures.

With some help from our friends at Travelers Insurance, our team has whipped up some winter driving tips to keep you merry and bright in this winter wonderland!

Watch the Weather

Whether you’re dropping the kids off at school or making the morning commute, make sure you check the weather before you leave the house. Being knowledgeable about what awaits you outside can help you decide what time to leave the house and if you need to take any extra precautions.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Just in case the weather is jaw-droppingly arctic, outfit your vehicle with all the appropriate gear. A scraper and brush for those icy mornings is a must-have for any Ohioan (even in early spring and late fall). Some other cold weather essentials include a flashlight, sand and salt, a snow shovel, jumper cables, water, reflective triangles and more.

Drive with Caution

Driving in winter weather is challenging for even the most experienced drivers. Be patient and make sure you drive with your headlights on, reduce your speed and increase your following distance, avoid using cruise control and pass drivers with extra caution.

Don’t Panic

The most important rule of driving – especially in the winter – is not to panic. If you encounter problems, make sure your vehicle is safely out of harm’s way and wait for help. And if you’re unsure whether it’s safe to drive, considering waiting until the roads improve.

No matter what happens in your vehicle this winter, Superior Insurance Services is here to help. Contact one of our trusted agents to learn more about our auto coverage today.
